English Historical Linguistics 1992This volume brings together a selection of 28 out of the 76 papers read at ICHEL-7 in Valencia. The book opens with a general section, in which Richard Hogg examines the relationship between linguistics and philology, Enrique Bernárdez analyzes syntactic change from the point of view of catastrophe theory, Roger Sell suggests a pragmatic analysis of historical data, and Norman Blake and Jacek Fisiak re-open the debate on periodization in the history of English. The rest of the papers is grouped in four sections: Phonology and Writing, Morphology and Syntax, Lexicology and Semantics, and Varieties of English and Studies on Individual Texts.

On Subject and Theme: A Discourse Functional Perspective

On Subject and Theme: A Discourse Functional PerspectiveThe ten papers in this volume focus on Subject and Theme. Theme began its life as a semantic notion in the work of Vilém Mathesius, while Subject has traditionally been seen as just a syntactic entity. More recently two related perspectives on these concepts have attracted linguists' attention: the formal criteria for their recognition and the relations between the two concepts. Using the systemic functional model as their point of departure, the papers in the present volume consider the two notions in a wider context by relating them to the interpersonal and textual metafunctions of language.

The present book details the most recent developments in this rapidly developing field with papers written by linguists primarily based in academic institutions in North America, although many conduct their fieldwork elsewhere. The articles in this volume — position papers and case studies — focus on some of the most critical issues in the field.

Perspectives on Grammaticalization

Perspectives on GrammaticalizationThis is the second of two volumes deriving from papers presented at the Nineteenth Annual UWM linguistics Symposium held in Milwaukee in 1990. It focuses on the evolution of grammatical form and meaning from lexical material, which has reinvigorated historical analysis and theory and led to advances in the understanding of the relation between diachrony and universals. The richness and potential of some of the leading approaches to grammaticalization are here illustrated in thirteen selected papers.
