The aim of this volume is to bring together contributions from international research on writing and motivation. It not only addresses the basic question of how motivation to write can be fostered, but also provides analyses of conceptual and theoretical issues at the intersection of the topics of motivation and writing. What emerges from the various chapters is that the motivational aspects of writing represent a rich, productive and partially still unexplored research field.

John Adair transformed our understanding of how leadership works with his pioneering book Not Bosses But Leaders. Here he explores the nature of motivation, individual needs and how they relate to the key tasks facing leaders and managers. Positive motivation, he argues, can create, maintain and improve the performance of any team.
"We only use something like 10 percent of our brain, anywhere between 5 and 15 percent—I don't know what the current estimates are," as vos Savant told the reference book Newsmakers. In her view, humans are capable of much more. But motivation is the key: "So how much of a role is motivation playing day-to-day, when we are talking about much smaller differences? And is it measuring, perhaps—this is just a wild, out-of-the-blue kind of a guess— does it measure one person using 17.7 percent of their brain versus some one person who uses 17.8 percent? Is that what I.Q. does?
The author draws on her teaching experience to show how an interesting lead-in to a text-based lesson can unlock a treasury of linguistic usage and stimulate students' curiosity and motivation to learn. The one hundred original pre-text activities are designed to improve students' learning abilities and strengthen their linguistic confidence. They should also help improve students' motivation and confidence by bringing the text to life. The book features activities for use with almost any text, from short articles and poems to full-length novels and plays and is suitable for all levels and abilities. Many activities include little or no preparation and use a "recipe" format.
