The Six Faces of Henry VIIIThe Six Faces of Henry VIII

With the help of writers, historians, musicologists, film buffs and Alan Bennett, Ian Hislop sets out to analyse six images of Henry VIII which turn out to be rather better portraits of the periods in which they were created than they are historical insights into the King himself. However, given that his most famous portrait, by Hans Holbein, is itself an artfully drawn propaganda tool we shouldn't be all that surprised.

When we strongly encourage people to do something, it's called an exhortation. But what is the proper term for strongly discouraging people? One candidate is admonition. Another is dehortation, the opposite of exhortation. But perhaps the best term for an emphatic piece of dissuasive advice is neverism. Carnal HoursIn the Bahamas the carnal hours occupy the time between dark and daylight. They also occupy the sharp mind of Chicago shamus Nathan Heller, once again sleuthing his way through a period mystery that tosses real characters in with invented ones and juxtaposes a documented death with an imagined one. Collins is a master of this sub-genre: Heller's previous adventures have produced many award nominations and three outright wins, the last being a Shamus for Stolen Away , in which Nate found himself solving the Lindbergh case. Here he's sweating in the Caribbean heat after local millionaire Sir Harry Oakes hires him to get the goods on his smooth...
