English in a Nutshell by John Edward Thompson has been compiled from the duplicated sheets used by the author in his own classroom over a number of years. It traces the foundations and derivations of the English language and enumerates the Parts of Speech. It deals with punctuation, number and gender, illustrates the more common figures of speech and includes examples of grammatical errors and a number of useful spelling hints. As a supplement to a series of orthodox English Text books it provides ample revisionary material and serves as a basis for numerous exercises which, it is suggested, will extend the child's vocabulary and facilitate his use of language.
