Imagining the Anglo-Saxon Past - The Search for Anglo-Saxon Paganism and Anglo-Saxon TrialImagining the Anglo-Saxon Past - The Search for Anglo-Saxon Paganism and Anglo-Saxon Trial

Published together here are two studies, one already a classic and the other based on recent scholarship, by a scholar who has done so much to rectify myths of the Anglo-Saxon religious and literary past. A reprint of his 1975 text on the nature of Anglo-Saxon paganism and later `stock views' of it is neatly juxtaposed with Eric Stanley's recent study on the origins of trial by jury.

Arthur and the Anglo-Saxon WarsArthur and the Anglo-Saxon Wars

The Arthurian Age; the Celtic Twilight; the Dark Ages; the Birth of England; these are the powerfully romantic names often given to one of the most confused yet vital periods in British history. It is an era upon which rival Celtic and English nationalisms frequently fought. It was also a period of settlement, and of the sword. Feasting the Dead - Food and Drink in Anglo-Saxon Burial RitualsFeasting the Dead - Food and Drink in Anglo-Saxon Burial Rituals

Anglo-Saxons were frequently buried with material artefacts, ranging from pots to clothing to jewellery, and also with items of food, while the funeral ritual itself was frequently marked by feasting, sometimes at the graveside. The book examines the place of food and feasting in funerary rituals from the earliest period to the eleventh century, considering the changes and transformations that occurred during this time, drawing on a wide range of sources, from archaeological evidence to the existing texts. It looks in particular at representations of funerary feasting, how it functions as a tool for memory, and sheds light on the relationship between the living and the dead.

The King's English - Strategies of Translation in the Old English BoethiusThe King's English - Strategies of Translation in the Old English Boethius

In the late ninth century, while England was fighting off Viking incursions, Alfred the Great devoted time and resources not only to military campaigns but also to a campaign of translation and education unprecedented in early medieval Europe. The King's English explores how Alfred's translation of Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy from Latin into Old English exposed Anglo-Saxon elites to classical literature, history, science, and Christian thought. More radically, the Boethius, as it became known, told its audiences how a leader should think and what he should be, providing models for leadership and wisdom that live on in England to this day.
