20

Dialectology Meets Typology: Dialect Grammar from a Cross-Linguistic PerspectiveIn what ways can dialectologists and language typologists profit from each others' work when looking across the fence? This is the guiding question of this volume, which involves follow-up questions such as: How can dialectologists profit from adopting the large body of insights in and hypotheses on language variation and language universals familiar from work in language typology, notably functional typology? Vice versa, what can typologists learn from the study of non-standard varieties?

From Perception to Meaning: Image Schemas in Cognitive Linguistics

From Perception to Meaning: Image Schemas in Cognitive LinguisticsThe 1987 landmark publications by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson made image schema one of the cornerstone concepts of the emerging experientialist paradigm of Cognitive Linguistics, a framework founded upon the rejection of the mind-body dichotomy and stressing the fundamentally embodied nature of meaning, imagination and reason - hence language. Explorations in Pragmatics: Linguistic, Cognitive and Intercultural Aspects (Mouton Series in Pragmatics)The papers in this volume reflect current trends in international research in pragmatics over recent years. The unique feature of the book is that the authors coming from ten different countries represent all aspects of pragmatics and address issues that have emerged as the result of recent research in pragmatics proper and neighboring fields such as cognitive psychology, philosophy, and communication. Recent theoretical work on the semantics/pragmatics interface, empirical work within cognitive and developmental psychology, intercultural communication and bilingual pragmatics have directed attention to issues that warrant reexamination and revision of some of the central tenets and claims of the field of pragmatics.

There are also specific chapters on modality in Zapotec and American Sign Language, which show the range of forms that modal notions can take. To assist its tutorial function, the book closes with a comprehensive conceptual outline of all the chapters.

The Language of Evaluation: The Appraisal Framework
49

The Language of Evaluation: The Appraisal FrameworkThis is the first comprehensive account of the Appraisal Framework, an approach developed over the past decade for analyzing the language of evaluation, the linguistic realization of attitudes, judgments and emotion and the ways in which these evaluations are negotiated interpersonally. The underlying linguistic theory is explained and justified, and the application of this flexible tool, which has been applied to a wide variety of text and discourse analysis issues, including classroom interaction, academic English, literary stylistics, language of the law and of health professionals, political rhetoric and casual conversation, is demonstrated throughout by sample text analyses drawn from a range of registers, genres and fields.

For Will - enjoy :)
