A brief and accessible introduction to the concepts and techniques used in applied linguistics research, which will be illustrated using real-life examples. The book covers both qualitative and quantitative research design, sampling procedures, instrumentation and analyses found in applied linguistics research.
Ideas of social interaction are increasingly having an impact upon research into the learning and teaching of second languages. The aims of this book are to: demonstrate the importance of investigating second language learning and teaching from a social-interactional and sociocultural perspective; describe the implications of the social-interaction perspective for the practice of language teaching and learning including teacher education; outline some interdisciplinary links between the social-interactional and sociocultural approaches to language learning and teaching and other approaches such as the social constructionist approach.
Whether or not English becomes eventually the universal auxiliary language for international communication-as predicted confidently in some quarters and striven for in others-there is no gainsaying the fact that World War II has given our tongue greater prestige and wider currency than it ever before enjoyed, thanks to the stationing of British and American troops-especially the latter all over the globe. The American jeep and bulldozer, chewing gum and candy, are admired and desired throughout the inhabited world today, and in many cases the American names for these commodities have been taken over more or less directly into local languages or dialects.
Writing with style-Conversations on the art of writing
Their textbooks haven’t explained the basics to them in language they could readily understand, or even care to understand.
Others, perhaps, are victims of overlong textbooks, self-defeating in their glorious comprehensiveness. (Who, after all, can distinguish the fundamental from the trivial after trudging through 500 pages of technical lore, however well presented?) My hope is that this book-an informal, compact, practical little book styled after my own writing conferences- answers the wish for a “survival kit.” I’ve stocked it with emergency provisions especially useful to those of you lost in the jungles of essay-writing.
The International Journal of Applied Linguistics (InJAL) publishes articles that explore the relationship between expertise in linguistics, broadly defined, and the everyday experience of language. Its scope is international in that it welcomes articles which show explicitly how local issues of language use or learning exemplify more global concerns.
