In the year 1856, I, Hermann Schultz, a German by birth, received a prize allowing me to study botany in Greece. In Athens, I boarded at the home of a man named Christodoulos. Every day, I went into the country to study plants, but I dared not go as far as I would have liked. Athens was surrounded by bandits. I am not a coward, as you will soon see, but I value my life. It is a gift from my parents and for their sakes I wish to preserve it as long as possible.
