The present volume is mostly about contemporary writers, many of whom have received little sustained attention from critics. For example, Maxine Hong Kingston, Erica Jong, A. R. Gurney, Robert Stone, Tim O'Brien, Ann Beattie, and Russell Banks have been written about in the review pages of newspapers and magazines, but their work has yet to attract significant scholarship.
Supplement V is a rich and varied collection that treats authors from a wide range of ethnic, social, and cultural backgrounds. The critics who contributed to this collection in themselves represent a range of backgrounds and critical approaches, although the baseline for inclusion was that each essay should be accessible to the nonspecialist reader or beginning student.
