Free As a Butterfly

Mindy Monarch flies home to California for a long winter vacation, and in the Spring, the new generation of Monarchs begins the return journey to Canada...with much worry of finding milkweed to lay eggs and flowers for nectar. But the discovery of school children planting a butterfly garden saves the day. Boone’s story of the life cycle and migration of the Western Monarch is one that very young children can understand and spend hours enjoying...reading and coloring original illustrations by Susi Grell Knox that include a fun foldout page of the Welcome Home Monarch Festival.

About the Author

Sheila Boone, 5th Great Granddaughter and direct descendant of Daniel Boone, is carrying on the pioneer Boone spirit by devoting her life to the cause of saving the American Western Monarch. Growing up by the Alsea River on the Oregon Coast, close to where the pioneer family settled, Sheila has always been a wild life photographer and naturalist. She has dreamed of a book about the Monarch for very young children, but never dreamed that the inspiration for such a book would be her own. She is excited that FREE AS A BUTTERFLY will fulfill part of her dream of bringing children closer to nature as well as a beginning concept of freedom. Sheila is thrilled to have three children and five grandchildren to carry on the Boone family tradition.
