FCE skills Grammar and Usage Sb (2002)

82

This book provides grammar and usage practice for students preparing for Paper 3 of the FCE exam. It can also, however, be used as a general grammar and usage workbook for students at this level. It aims to combine both general communicative grammar work with exam training; to serve students as a valuable grammar reference resource and, through its task-based approach, to improve students' grammar learning strategies.

Each unit is divided into four sections   rhe unit starts with a Lead-in section which introduces the language area to be looked at and sets students problem-solving tasks through which they can begin ю explore some of the grammar and usage issues.
This is then followed by an interactive Reference section which, as well as highlighting the key grammar points and usage contrasts, requires students to fill in tables and grids, complete sets of examples and do a variety of exercises so that they become involved in the compiling of their own reference resource.
The third section is for Communicative practice. Students are encouraged to use the language which has been introduced in the two previous sections through a wide variety of lively and engaging task frameworks. The tasks involve contexts which encourage students to engage more personally with the language by talking about experiences and sharing opinions, deductions and what they know of the world with other students.
The unit ends with the Exam focus section. In each unit one or two types of exam question from Paper 3 are looked at. The ways in which the language can be tested by each question type are presented and students are given useful exam tips on how to tack e each question. The Exam focus questions can be done in class or at home and all the Exam focus sections taken together provide thorough exam training for the Use of F.nglish section of the Cambridge First Certificate examination.

Each unit provides approximately two hours' class work. There is scope for flexibility in timings as certain tasks in the Reference sections and tasks in the Exam focus sections can be set for homework. The Teacher's Book also gives several useful ideas for follow-up tasks to main tasks.
