"Well-illustrated, informative works that inform and inspire readers can recruit new scientists as well as entertain the general public. This book, volume 3 in Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia, does both. The geologic time scale is essential for readers like myself who do not remember their Ordovician from their Oligocene. The breadth and depth of coverage is limited by the subject matter and resources, as the editor notes, but a pleasing balance was achieved nonetheless."
