What was Calamity Jane's real name? Was she a horse thief and a preacher's daughter? Did she actually serve under General George Custer? The truth and myth are difficult to separate in the wild life of Calamity Jane. An independent spirit, she never stayed in one place for long.

During the decline of the Roman Empire, the migrations of a strong, rude people began to change the life of Europe. They were the German barbarians, or Teutonic tribes, who swept across the Rhine and the Danube into the empire. There they accepted Christianity. The union of barbarian vigor and religious spirit carried Europe to the threshold of modern times. That span from the ancient era to the modern is called the Middle Ages.

Since the assassination of Queen Victoria in 1840, a cabal of prominent men - including King George V, HRH Prince Albert, Benjamin Disraeli, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel - has received guidance from the afterlife. The spirit of a dead mystic, Abdu El Yezdi, has helped them to steer the empire into a period of unprecedented peace and creativity.

The Sacrament, a female spirit from the beginning of time, has escaped the Citadel and the Sancti are dead with the exception of one. A strange disease, a blight, has taken hold, creating boils that cover the one remaining Sancti. Soon after, the disease spreads to the Citadel as well as to their beloved garden. Trees that have withstood the centuries now grow withered. Without the Sacrament the Citadel lies fallow, the people that serve it, confused. One member sees the future and assists in the restoration of the Sacrament another sees darkness and is determined to bring the ancient spirit back to the Citadel.
