Bad Medicine - Misconceptions and Misuses Revealed, from Distance Healing to Vitamin O
Prehistoric humans believed cedar ashes and incantations could cure a head injury. Ancient Egyptians believed the heart was the center of thought, the liver produced blood, and the brain cooled the body. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates was a big fan of bloodletting. Today, we are still plagued by countless medical myths and misconceptions. Bad Medicine sets the record straight by debunking widely held yet incorrect notions of how the body works, from cold cures to vaccination fears.
Cholera, Chloroform and the Science of Medicine - A Life of John Snow
Although there is little new here for historians, much of this material will probably be new to epidemiologists, especially the information on Snow’s early years and his remarkably self-disciplined upward mobility. The authors also examine links between Snow’s epidemiologic approaches and his work in respiratory physiology, pathology, and experimental science—a laudable attempt to understand his thinking processes. Still, there are disappointments, such as the distancing of Snow as a person and a “Snow-centric” emphasis on what he alone thought and did, omitting much of the context within which his ideas evolved.
Spaces, Objects and Identities in Early Modern Italian Medicine
This collection, by an international team of scholars, presents exciting examples of research currently being undertaken on early modern Italy which question the conventional boundaries of medical history. It brings together historians of medicine and scholars of different backgrounds who are re-visiting the field with new questions and unexplored sources. By exploring crucial areas of intersection between the territory of medicine and that of law, politics, religion, art and material culture, their work highlights the connections between these apparently separate fields and challenges our understanding of what we regard as medical activities, medical identities, spaces and objects.
