American Theorists of the Novel - Henry James, Lionel Trilling, Wayne C. Booth (Routledge CriticalAmerican Theorists of the Novel - Henry James, Lionel Trilling, Wayne C. Booth (Routledge CriticalWhy read James, Trilling, and Booth? The answer may not be immediatelyobvious. Writing from the 1860s and through to the early twentieth century, Henry James (1843–1916) is most widely renowned for works such as The Wings of the Dove (1902b), The Golden Bowl (1904), The Portrait of a Lady (1881), and his ghost story, ‘The Turn of the Screw’ (1898). But he also published ground-breaking prefaces to his own fiction and numerous critical essays. Lionel Trilling (1905–75) became well known as a literary critic in a 1950s academic scene dominated by, as we shall see, the ‘New Criticism’ of earlier decades.

Elise Broach - Masterpiece

With overtones of Chasing Vermeer and The Borrowers, this inventive mystery involves two families that inhabit the same Manhattan apartment: the Pompadays-a slick, materialistic couple, their infant son and thoughtful James, from the wife's previous marriage-and a family of beetles, who live behind the kitchen sink and watch sympathetically as James's charms go unappreciated.

English Hours - A Portrait of a CountryEnglish Hours - A Portrait of a Country

Henry James left America for England in 1876 and remained in his adopted country for the next three decades. Arriving in Liverpool, he made his way first to London, the “dreadful, delightful city” that he would come to both love and hate. James reveled in the exoticism and immensity of all that was unknown to him, and his writing spills over with youthful excitement, humor, and vivid descriptions of the people, landscapes, towns, and cities he encountered. He later set out to explore the English countryside: Chester, Warwick, Devon, Wells, Salisbury, Suffolk, and Rye, where he eventually settled, bought Lamb House, and wrote prolifically—producing some of his finest works.

Remember Me

In 1786 a fisherman's daughter from Cornwall called Mary Broad was sentenced to be hung for theft. But her sentence was commuted, and she was transported to Australia, one of the first convicts to arrive there. How Mary escaped the harsh existence of the colony and found true love, and how she was captured and taken back to London in chains, only to be released after a trial where she was defended by no less than James Boswell, is one of the most gripping and moving stories of human endeavour (based on an amazing true story) you will ever read.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-One of the few biography series for beginning readers. Each book gives an overview of a president's life and has pen-and-ink sketches or photos on most double-page spreads. All three titles have double-page spreads of vital statistics and quick facts. However, it is disconcerting that the authors continually refer to their subjects by their first names well past their childhood years The final pages include a one-page glossary, an index, and a list of the same three Internet sites with a disclaimer that these sites are subject to change. To remedy that problem, there is a statement on how to find presidential information on the Internet.
