The Nibelungenlied
The greatest of the heroic epics to emerge from medieval Germany, the Nibelungenlied is a revenge saga of sweeping dimensions. It tells of the dragon-slayer Sivrit, the mysterious kingdom of the Nibelungs, a priceless treasure guarded by dwarves and giants, an Amazonian queen, fortune-telling water-sprites, and a cloak of invisibility. Driven by the conflict between Kriemhilt, the innocent maiden turned she-devil, and her antagonist, the stoic, indomitable Hagen, the story is one of love, jealousy, murder, and revenge, ending in slaughter on a horrific scale.
Fifteen years after the notorious War at Cat Lake, Missy Parker, the child who stood in the center of the demonic war, now lives in Texas with her husband, Pat. But Satan's minions remain at Cat Lake, waiting. On a bleak night in April, 1960, evil is aroused. An innocent black woman is attacked by a mob of white men. Old Mose Washington confronts the men with a twelve-gauge shotgun, and people die.
John Wayne O'Grady, filled with anger and self-righteousness, enters a Family Value restaurant, pulls out a shotgun, and tells the customers and employees that it is time for Family Value to pay its dues. Among those present is Freda, a nine-year-old girl oblivious to the gunman, who stands at the counter demanding the Wild West sticker that she should have gotten with her Noonburger.

The Confession: A Novel by John Grisham
An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. For every innocent man sent to prison, there is a guilty one left on the outside. He doesn’t understand how the police and prosecutors got the wrong man, and he certainly doesn’t care. He just can’t believe his good luck.
