Santo can certainly craft her words and is well-thought out in her writing, but Three Story House never really captured me. I struggled night after night to care about the characters. I prefer to read a story chronologically rather than skipping around in time. It's just too confusing for me and it gets to the point that I don't want to read on long enough to figure out "OK - she's this old now, has what I just read previously already happened to her or not?" I want to be able to read for relaxation and enjoyment and not have to think too much about what I'm reading.
In the epilogue to her biography of Mao Tse-tung, Jung Chang and her husband and cowriter Jon Halliday lament that, "Today, Mao's portrait and his corpse still dominate Tiananmen Square in the heart of the Chinese capital." For Chang, author of Wild Swans, this fact is an affront, not just to history, but to decency. Mao: The Unknown Story does not contain a formal dedication, but it is clear that Chang is writing to honor the millions of Chinese who fell victim to Mao's drive for absolute power in his 50-plus-year struggle to dominate China and the 20th-century political landscape.
Nicholas Ryan has done it again! He's written a book so enthralling that I forget to be terrified despite his amazingly descriptive style. The key to enjoying a horror book for me is to almost forget the horror with the story and then, to suddenly be up to my eyeballs in ugly, scary nastiness. Nicholas Ryan has done just that with this story of a horrifying epidemic that hits on the east coast while local fisherman are miles out to sea. The story does so much more than just show you the horror. He takes you on a ride with more twists and turns then I ever expected. If you've enjoyed the ride Max Brooks takes his readers on, you better buckle in for this one as well!
Bared To You is the story of Eva and Gideon (great name for him). The story is told from Eva's point of view and I only wish that I could have heard it from Gideon's also. They are both extremely attractive and are instantly drawn to each other, but neither is looking for a relationship. Eva has just moved from San Diego to New York with her roommate. It is when she goes to her office building for the first time, that she runs into Gideon, literally, and their lives are forever changed. They each struggle with their own internal demons, insecurities, and past hurts. Through the story, each tries to overcome their issues as well as help each other.
