What Designers Know

What Designers KnowWhat Designers Know

Each chapter deals with a different technique from which we can best represent and make explicit the forms of knowledge used by designers. The book explores whether design knowledge is special, and attempts to get to the root of where design knowledge comes from. Crucially, it focuses on how designers use drawings in communicating their ideas and how they 'converse' with them as their designs develop. It also shows how experienced designers use knowledge differently to novices suggesting that design 'expertise' can be developed. Overall, this book builds a layout of the kinds of skill, knowledge and understanding that make up what we call designing.

The Fat and the ThinThe Fat and the Thin

"The Fat and the Thin" is a study of the teeming life which surrounds the great central markets of Paris. The heroine is Lisa Quenu, a daughter of Antoine Macquart (see The Fortune of the Rougons). She has become prosperous, and with prosperity her selfishness has increased. Her brother-in-law Florent had escaped from penal servitude in Cayenne and lived for a short time in her house, but she became tired of his presence and ultimately denounced him to the police. The book contains vivid pictures of the markets, bursting with the food of a great city, and of the vast population which lives by handling and distributing it.

The Life And Times of the Thunderbolt KidThe Life And Times of the Thunderbolt Kid

For most of his adult life, Bryson has made his home in the U.K, yet he actually entered the world in 1951 as part of America's postwar baby boom and spent his formative years in Des Moines, Iowa. Bryson wistfully recounts a childhood of innocence and optimism, a magical point in time when a distinct sense of regional and community identity briefly—but blissfully—coexisted with fledgling technology and modern convenience. Narrating, Bryson skillfully wields his amorphous accent—somehow neither fully British nor Midwestern—to project a genial and entertaining tour guide of lost Americana.

Calm Engery - How People Regulate Mood with Food and ExercisesCalm Engery - How People Regulate Mood with Food and Exercises

Obesity is reaching alarming proportions. In this insightful new approach to understanding why this is happening, acclaimed mood scientist Robert Thayer offers a new appreciation of the real cause--emotional eating. But this is not just emotional eating as previously known; rather it is a new scientific analysis of exactly how different moods affect eating. He shows how unprecedented stress in society and epidemic levels of depression have led people to food as a poor means of managing mood.

The CrusadesThe Crusades

For almost two hundred years, from 1095, the Crusades raged on and off dramatically ending with the fall of Acre in 1291, leaving us with some of the most striking images of the Middle Ages. This was the period that saw the birth and dominance of the Knights Templar, The Hospitallers and the Teutonic Knights and also gave rise to such legendary figures as Saladin and Richard the Lionheart.
