Gender, race and the Writing of Empire - Public Discourse and the Boer WarGender, race and the Writing of Empire - Public Discourse and the Boer War

This book looks at the ways Victorian ideas about gender and race supported British imperialism at the turn of the century. It examines the Boer War of 1899-1902 through the war writings of literary figures such as Arthur Conan Doyle, Olive Schreiner, H. Rider Haggard and Rudyard Kipling, and also through newspapers, propaganda, and other forms of public debate in print. Paula M. Krebs' analysis of the part played by ideas about gender and race in public discourse makes a significant new contribution to the study of British imperialism.

Politics and Culture in Victorian Britain - Essays in Memory of Colin MatthewPolitics and Culture in Victorian Britain - Essays in Memory of Colin Matthew

How and why should we study Victorian Britain? The answer to this question used to be quite straightforward. It was the Victorian contribution to modern politics which stood out above all else. Paradoxically, writers found equivalents of the societies which produced Homeric or Northern epics not in Europe, but on the margins of empire and among its subject peoples.

Governments, Labour and the Law in Mid-Victorian Britain - The Trade Union LegislationGovernments, Labour and the Law in Mid-Victorian Britain - The Trade Union Legislation

This is a study of how governments and their specialist advisers, in an age of free trade and the minimal state, attempted to create a viable legal framework for trade unions and strikes. It traces the collapse, in the face of judicial interventions, of the regime for collective labour devised by the Liberal Tories in the 1820s, following the repeal of the Combination Acts. The new arrangements enacted in the 1870s allowed collective labour unparalleled freedoms, contended by the newly-founded Trades Union Congress.

Treating Mental Illness and Behavior Disorders in Children and Adults with Mental RetardationTreating Mental Illness and Behavior Disorders in Children and Adults with Mental Retardation

Since the 1970s, the development of normalization philosophy and the implementation of community care policies have highlighted the nature and treatment of psychiatric and behaviour disorders in people with mental retardation and rekindled the interest of scientists, psychiatric  practitioners, and service providers. With these changes has grown a substantial body of new research and information on the phenomenology, epidemiology, classification, and clinical features of mental illness and behavior disorders in mentally retarded persons.
