Dinosaur (Eyewitness Guides)
74

Dinosaur (Eyewitness Guides)There is so much to discover and learn about dinosaurs that it is not always easy to take it all in. Often the material is presented in a very dry or dull way. In this wonderful book we are offered a wealth of material in a form that is unique to the Eyewitness books. Not only are there illustrations and copies of prints, but a plethora of photographs are provided as well. The photographs often dominate the page, giving the reader a sense of being almost able to touch the item or animal. There are photos of modern reptiles, of replica dinosaurs, of fossils of every shape and size, of plants, of tools that "Fossil Hunters" use in the field, and of paleontologists working on dinosaur remains to discover their secrets. Every picture and photograph is labeled, and more often than not, it has an accompanying detailed annotation. Actual text is relatively short, yet the reader still receives a great deal of fascinating information about dinosaurs, their times, and how we learn about them. The authors cover both the expected basic topics, including physiology, habits, evolution, and extinction, and a few interesting subjects that are not as commonly discussed.

Verbal Art, Verbal Sign, Verbal Time

Verbal Art, Verbal Sign, Verbal TimeRoman Jakobson, one of the most important thinkers of our century, was best known for his role in the rise and spread of the structuralist approach to linguistics and literature. His formative years with the Russian Futurists and subsequent involvement in the Moscow and Prague Linguistic Circles (which he co-founded) resulted in a lifelong devotion to fundamental change in both literary theory and linguistics. In bringing each to bear upon the other, he enlivened both disciplines; if a literary work was to him a linguistic fact, it was also a semiotic phenomenon -part of the entire universe of signs.

The Aesthetics of Chaos: Nonlinear Thinking and Contemporary Literary Criticism

The Aesthetics of Chaos: Nonlinear Thinking and Contemporary Literary CriticismOne of the fundamental ideas of chaos theory is the "butterfly effect," first proposed by Edward Lorenz in the 1960s: a single, small event may yield exponentially enlarged effects, just as the single flap of a butterfly's wings may produce vast, unpredictable ramifications in weather patterns far away. Theorists of literature and culture who derive their conceptual framework from chaos theory are now performing the butterfly effect: a few suggestions on the part of certain physicists and biologists have inspired an exponentially growing literature of metaphorical applications in faraway fields. The Aesthetics of Chaos makes the salutory attempt to restrain, summarize, and unify the multivarious aesthetic theories of chaos.
