I think there is a clear need for this book as there is increasing recognition of the autistic spectrum as distinct from simply hard core autism, and also either a distinct rise in either the prevalence or recognition of these disorders or both, plus a recognition of the great burden on school systems, families and teachers as they attempt to cope with what are life long disabilities in the absence of any clear cut biological treatments. The book looks well organized and comprehensive. – John O’Reardon, MD, Department of Psychiatry, Director of Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
This is the first book to look at the links between ADHD and autistic spectrum disorders in depth. The author uses the metaphor of the 'tapestry' to more clearly explain the interwoven nature of these disorders. She discusses different approaches, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and of finding the right approach for each child. This holistic viewpoint is extremely useful for parents because it demonstrates how a deeper understanding of the complexity of human development can lead to more appropriate early intervention and treatment plans for children with complex symptoms.

This book exposes the traditional view that psychiatric drugs correct chemical imbalances as a dangerous fraud. It traces the emergence of this view and the way it supported the vested interests of the psychiatric profession, the pharmaceutical industry and the modern state. Instead it is proposed that psychiatric drugs 'work' by creating abnormal brain states, which are often unpleasant and impair normal intellectual and emotional functions along with other harmful consequences.
