Bead Crochet: A Beadwork How-To BookBead Crochet: A Beadwork How-To Book

One look at Barry's snazzy bracelets, necklaces, and doodads, and handicrafters will rush out for supplies. The idea that such dynamite-looking jewelry can be created at home is really exciting. Of course, there's a catch: experience in both beading and crochet is a must, despite sections on basics that Barry herself admits aren't really enough for beginners. But readers skilled in both crafts will have a great time. A full-color photo of each finished project faces a list of required materials, which is accompanied by a handy listing of page references to tips and techniques found elsewhere in the book.

The Essential Guide to Managing Small Business GrowthThe Essential Guide to Managing Small Business Growth

Lots of owner managers have one or two areas of knowledge and specialism - perhaps operations or sales. This book covers all the main areas, and goes into sufficient depth to be helpful, but isn't too academic. I personally found the Finance chapter really helpful, as it explains how to create and use a P&L account to help you understand what is really going on in your business. It also has sections on Personnel, Marketing and Strategy. Fairly easy to read- I took it on holiday and got through most of it.

A Field Guide for Science Writers: The Official Guide of the National Association of Science Writers,2 EditionA Field Guide for Science Writers: The Official Guide of the National Association of Science Writers,2 Edition

This is not a "field guide" in the sense of a reference or guidebook but a report from the field by more than 30 expert science writers from all disciplines. Each writes about his or her own area of expertise, often including a road map that shows how he or she ended up in a series of particularly interesting places, e.g., the New York Times, Science, and the President's Office of Technology. Somewhat similar to The New Science Journalists (LJ 4/15/95), although much more comprehensive, this well-written collection is full of interesting insights into professional science writing and serves as a valuable resource for current and would-be science writers.

Weird Astronomy: Tales of Unusual, Bizarre, and Other Hard to Explain ObservationsWeird Astronomy: Tales of Unusual, Bizarre, and Other Hard to Explain Observations

Weird Astronomy appeals to all who are interested in unusual celestial phenomena, whether they be amateur or professional astronomers or science buffs who just enjoy reading of odd coincidences, unexplained observations, and reports from space probes that "don’t quite fit." This book relates a variety of "unusual" astronomical observations ??unusual in the sense of refusing to fit easily into accepted thinking, or unusual in the observation having been made under difficult or extreme circumstances. Although some of the topics covered are instances of "bad astronomy," most are not. Some of the observations recorded here have actually turned out to be important scientific breakthroughs.
