Beholder's Eye is Czerneda's second book, and all of the strengths found in her debut (A Thousand Words for a Stranger) are here in force. Strong characterization, engaging storyline, and nice use of narrative structure. As with her first book, Czerneda uses a somewhat fantastical premise for the main character, but then grounds that firmly in a more believable milieu. Here, the main character, Esen-Alit-Quar, is a shape-shifter.
A Thousand Words for Stranger opens with a Prelude, in which two Enforcers are following a Clansman and Clanswoman -- the Enforcers are the police of the Trade Pact between various planets, but the Clan (a group of humanoids with powerful mental abilities) aren't part of that Pact. Then the Clanspeople are attacked, and the woman wanders off on her own. In Chapter 1, we find out that this woman is Sira, who is mindblocked and has no memories, only strange compulsions which govern her behaviour.
Tigana is the writer's fourth book, after the Fionavar trilogy, and it's with this book that he finds the first full measure of his unique voice. Tigana features a wealth of detail, everything from religion to politics to warfare to culture to interpersonal relationships, all in a setting analogous to medieval Italy. The list of writing traits mastered in Tigana also includes pain, which Kay has never shied away from.
