ail schools of thought available at the tlme in search for peremptory knowledge ( 'Um yaqlni). From skepticism he moved to Suftsm (Islamic mystlcism), and ftnally there are indications that he ended up studying the traditions (Hadith) of prophet M~ammad, which led many to claim that he shifted to the methodology of the traditlonalists (Ahl alIjadith) and that he abandoned Suftsm. It is the atm of this study to trace Al-Ghazzfiliyy's quest for knowledge throughout his life. This study will take into consideratlon the historical circumstances and the social contextin whichAl-Ghazzàliyy flourished. It is my conviction that these circumstances influenced his persona! and thus his intellectual life as well.
