In area one area, that is definitely not the case: those dealing with human rights and humanitarian aid are very close to lives of every one of us. Certainly they are most noticeable in extreme cases of violation of human rights or human and natural disasters. But you never know when or where the next crisis or disaster will break out. And for those who are not affiliated, the very existence of an increasingly thick network of such bodies and heightened awareness they generate contribute to a safer and more stable world community.
