The aim of this book is to perfect the speech habits of students on the one hand and to enrich their vocabulary on the other.
The book consists of two parts which in their turn are subdivided into several paragraphs. Each paragraph begins with a dialogue built around a certain number of word combinations and is followed by vocabulary notes giving the definitions of the word combinations. The word combinations are illustrated by sentences drawn in the main from modern English and American writers. Every paragraph includes various exercises all aimed at helping the students to remember the phrases given in each paragraph and at the same time to increase their practical skills.
The vocabulary chosen is not confined to a certain topic and can be employed both in monologue and in dialogue. The word combinations taken are those most frequently met with in the works of modern English and American writers, such as I.Murdoch, A. Cronin, K. Amis, E. Hemingway, M. Wilson, W.S. Maugham,
J. Priestley, D. Cusack, Gr. Green, D. Carter, J. Lindsay, R. Aldington, B. Show, Th. Dreiser, G. Gordon (The complete list given at the end of the book).
Numerous examples illustrating the word combinations are included in the vocabulary notes. Various exersises are also given to help the students acquire a better understanding of the phrases and to see just how they are used, thus ensuring better assimilation of the material.
