Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), Danish author and poet, wrote many poems, plays, stories and travel essays, but is best known for his fairy tales of which there are over one hundred and fifty, published in numerous collections during his life and many still in print today. Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark in 1805. Among his best-known stories are The Tinder-box, The Princess and the Pea, The Brave tin soldier,The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl, The Emperor's new suit, The Ugly Duckling and The Red Shoes. During Andersen's lifetime he was feted by royalty and acclaimed for having brought joy to children across Europe. His fairy tales have been translated into over 150 languages and continue to be published in millions of copies all over the world and inspired many other works.
