Cast into Doubt
A gripping novel of domestic suspense - Shelby Sloan, a successful Philadelphia businesswoman in her early forties, has one child, a daughter whom she raised on her own. She gives her daughter, Chloe, and son-in-law, Rob, a Caribbean cruise as a gift, while she takes the opportunity to mind her four-year-old grandson. But life becomes a nightmare when Rob calls to tell her that Chloe has disappeared overboard. The police decide it was an accident, but Shelby refuses to accept the official verdict . . .
The name Borgia is synonymous with the corruption, nepotism, and greed that were rife in Renaissance Italy. The powerful, voracious Rodrigo Borgia, better known to history as Pope Alexander VI, was the central figure of the dynasty. Two of his seven papal offspring also rose to power and fame - Lucrezia Borgia, his daughter, whose husband was famously murdered by her brother, and that brother, Cesare, who served as the model for Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince.
This book always brings a tear to my eye on the last page. I bought it for my daughter for my son's first Christmas. I was amazed at how similar our family traditions are to the family in the story. And they have a cat just like us! My daughter LOVES it and reads it year round. And ever since she got it, she's taken to calling my son "our present" because he is "the best gift of all" (that's the part that always gets me).
Picking up more than two years after the events of The Shadow in the North, the beginning of this book finds Sally Lockhart living a happy Victorian life. She has a daughter. If Sally wants to keep her daughter, she must slip into the darker side of London, rife with poverty, disease, crime, socialist agitators, and a conspiracy designed to victimize Jewish immigrants, and keep herself and her daughter safe until she can figure out who Parrish is – and what he wants with her.
Kate Blackwell is one of the richest women in the world. She is an enigma, a woman surrounded by unanswered questions. Her father was a diamond prospector who struck it rich, her mother the daughter of a crooked Afrikaaner merchant. On her ninetieth birthday ghosts haunt Kate's thoughts.
