AMERICAN WRITERS, Supplement VII By Jay Parini Number Of Pages: 656 Publication Date: 1977-02-01 ISBN-10: 068480624X ISBN-13: 9780684806242
Supplement VII is mostly about contemporary writers, many of whom have received little sustained attention from critics. For example, Julia Alvarez, Tobias Wolff, Sandra Cisneros, Annie Proulx, Jamaica Kincaid, Carol Shields, Richard Bausch, Andre Dubus, and Barbara Kingsolver have been written about in the review pages of newspapers and magazines, and their fiction has acquired a substantial following, but their work has yet to attract significant scholarship. Supplement VII is an abundant and heterogeneous collection that treats authors from a wide range of ethnic, social, and cultural backgrounds. Cisneros and Alvarez, for example, are Latina writers. Jamaica Kincaid is from the Caribbean. Kosinski was an emigrant from the world of Soviet-dominated Poland who escaped to the United States. Their work often (but not always) reflects their origins in fascinating ways. The critics who contributed to this collection represent a catholic range of backgrounds and critical approaches, although the baseline for inclusion was that each essay should be accessible to the non-specialist reader or beginning student.
