A Historical Guide to Herman Melville (Historical Guides to American Authors)

A Historical Guide to Herman Melville (Historical Guides to American Authors)This collection gathers together original essays dealing with Melville's relations with his historical era, with class, with the marketplace, with ethnic otherness, and with religion. These essays are framed by a new, short biography by Robert Milder, an introduction by Giles Gunn, an illustrated chronology, and a bibliographical essay. Taken together, these pieces afford a fresh and searching set of perspectives on Melville's connections both with his own age and also with our own. This book makes the case, as does no other collection of criticism of its size, for Melville's commanding centrality to nineteenth-century American writing.

Formal Semantics - the Essential Readings
58

Formal Semantics - the Essential ReadingsThis is a great book if you are part of a younger generation that did not grow up professionally while these papers were first being written/discussed. A few selections seem out of place, or perhaps are not quite as foundational as others, but overall it is a collection well worth having. Read from beginning to end you will have a basic handle on a large number of central topics in semantics.

Concise Encyclopedia of Grammatical Categories

Concise Encyclopedia of Grammatical CategoriesComplementing Brown & Miller's recent Concise Encyclopedia of Syntactic Theories (1996), to which this is a companion volume, this encyclopedia is a collection of articles drawn from the highly successful Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics. It presents a collection of 79 articles, all of which have been revised and updated. It also provides a number of newly commissioned articles, one of which has been substantially updated and extended. The volume is alphabetically organised and includes an introduction and a glossary. The Concise Encyclopedia of Grammatical Categories will provide a uniquely comprehensive and authoritative overview of the building blocks of syntax: word classes, sentence/clause types, functional categories of the noun and verb, anaphora and pronominalisation, transitivity, topicalisation and work order.

Multi Media Translation: Concepts, Practices and Research

Multi Media Translation: Concepts, Practices and ResearchThis work considers the impact of technology on our command of (foreign) languages, and the effects that our (lack of) linguistic skills have on technology, even though modern communications technology implies mulitlingualism, yet at the same time paves the way for the development of a "lingua franca". The challenges are not only industrial, political, social administrative, judicial, ethical; they are also cultural and linguistic. This volume is a collection of essays and the edited results of some of the presentations and debates from two international forums on the subject.
