Amphibian Man (Amphibian) is perhaps the most well-known novel by Alexander Beliaev, a talented Russian science fiction writer who lived in the early 20th c. First published in 1928. The book tells a story of a young man named Ichtiandr (literally "Fish Man" in Greek) who as a child received a life-saving transplant - a set of shark gills. The operation was performed by his father, a scientist and a maverick surgeon, in an attempt to save his son's failing lungs.
A wonderfully funny tall story from Kurt Vonnegut, Sam Shepard's sharply observed account of a young boy who runs away from home and star light a virtuoso science fiction from Isaac Asimov, are some of the pleasures in store in this collection. It contains pieces by new young talents as well as from the already well know, and these taken together provide us with a marvellous window on contemporary America, a view into its rich and exciting variety of peoples, cities and farmlands, cultures and imaginations.
Martin Eden, Jack London's semiautobiographical novel about a struggling young writer, is considered by many to be the author's most mature work. Personifying London's own dreams of education and literary fame as a young man in San Francisco, Martin Eden's impassioned but ultimately ineffective battle to overcome his bleak circumstances makes him one of the most memorable and poignant characters Jack London ever created.
