Dear friends! Welcome back to Englishtips! Did you miss us? We surely missed you all! We are glad to be able to re-launch after a 3-day downtime. Those of you following our updates on our Twitter already know that we had to switch off our servers until we could settle some legal issues. Luckily, the downtime is over and we’re back online - with a lot of new ideas and enthusiasm! Thank you for being with us!
1. We have added a ‘Rules and Terms of Use’ page in both English and Russian – please take a look and make sure you agree to them. 2. The ‘Download Agreement’ got renamed to ‘Terms of Use’ – all users must agree to them if they want to use the website. It is available in every publication. 3. Following several copyright holders’ requests, we have added a way for them to be able to provide a link to their online store – for those of you who would like to by the hard copies of the materials they have found through our website. This new button ‘Purchase the Hard Copy’ can now be seen in every publication. At the moment it is not linked to anything yet, since we do not know the URLs for their online stores, but we’ll be gradually adding links there. Please hover your cursor over the button to see more information. 4. There are two more new links – for copyright holders, both leading the the ‘Rules and Terms of Use’ pages. One in the left sidebar, one – in the footer. 5. Some other minor elements of the website (RSS tab, etc) that are missing now will be soon added back to their places.
Nice to be back, isn’t it? :) Stay with us for a looooong-long Englishtips time of your life! Truly yours, ENGLISHTIPS_admin
"Mathematical Olympiad Treasures" aims at building a bridge between ordinary high school examples and exercises and more sophisticated, intricate and abstract concepts and problems in undergraduate mathematics. The book contains a stimulating collection of problems in the subjects of geometry and trigonometry, algebra, number theory and combinatorics. While it may be considered a sequel to "Mathematical Olympiad Challenges," the focus of "Treasures" is on engaging a wider audience of undergraduates to think creatively in applying techniques and strategies to problems in the real world.
This book is devoted to various explorations of how linguistics and pragmatics together can shed light on the contrasts between languages in their discourse-cultural settings. It arises from presentations and discussions held at the Fourth International Contrastive Linguistics Conference (ICLC4), which took place in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain from 20 to 23 September 2005.1 The twelve chapters analyse linguistic phenomena across different languages, taking into account their co-texts as well as the socio-cultural contexts in which they arise. The first two sections consider various questions of information structure, discourse analysis and lexis; each chapter is concerned in some way with the interplay between, on the one hand, grammatical and lexical organization and, on the other, the contexts in which utterances are used and texts emerge. The final chapters of the book consider how new techniques of contrastive linguistics and pragmatics are contributing to the primary field of application for contrastive analysis, language teaching and learning.
This book explains the nature of stress in the classroom in a clear, practical way, focussing in on how teachers can help themselves cope, and in turn, help the students in their care.

Cormac McCarthy sets his new novel, The Road, in a post-apocalyptic blight of gray skies that drizzle ash, a world in which all matter of wildlife is extinct, starvation is not only prevalent but nearly all-encompassing, and marauding bands of cannibals roam the environment with pieces of human flesh stuck between their teeth. If this sounds oppressive and dispiriting, it is. McCarthy may have just set to paper the definitive vision of the world after nuclear war.
