Simon's Saga for the SAT
Completely revised to reflect the current SAT test format, Simon's Saga for the SAT literally takes a "novel" approach to building students' verbal skills. Simon, a very cool college dude, shows college-bound kids around campus, introducing them to academic and social life. In the process, he helps them expand their vocabulary and develop overall verbal fluency. Simon emphasizes words and meanings students should know as they prepare to take the SAT. All new words to learn in Simon's story are printed in boldface type--your signal to check their definitions and correct usage. The boldface words appear with meanings and cross-references in a glossary at the back of the book.
This is a new kind of thesaurus. Its purpose is to help you achieve a better command of fluency-oriented vocabulary. And it groups together, under headwords, word groups that express meanings similar to, or somewhat similar to, their important meanings.
If you’re trying to achieve a good command of fluency-relevant vocabulary, a conventional thesaurus won’t be of much help — no matter how helpful it may be for other purposes. To achieve a good command of fluency-relevant vocabulary, you need dedicated fluency-oriented vocabulary building books — books that focus on fluency-building vocabulary.
Contributors from a variety of disciplines--including literature, art history, manuscript studies, philology, and more--consider the definitions and implications of style in Anglo-Saxon culture and in contemporary scholarship. They demonstrate that the idea of style as a "constant form" has its limitations, and that style is in fact the ordering of form, both verbal and visual. Anglo-Saxon texts and images carry meanings and express agendas, presenting us with paradoxes and riddles that require us to keep questioning the meanings of style.

Brutality and Desire: War and Sexuality in Europe's Twentieth Century
This wonderful book makes a powerful contribution to the history of Europe in the 20th century. With their complex and comparative treatment of wars -- from the Armenian genocide, to the Holocaust, colonization and decolonization, and the recent conflict in the Balkans -- these collected essays carefully historicize the meanings and modalities of sexualized violence and sexual desire.
