Textual Analysis: A Beginner's GuideTextual Analysis: A Beginner's Guide

Alan McKee presents a student friendly introduction to the analysis of cultural texts. The book highlights the cultural differences in interpretation with an array of fascinating examples. Textual Analysis is written in an accessible style with several useful case studies. Each chapter also includes exercises for classroom.

Text covers textual analysis, a methodology for researchers who are interested in the ways in which people make sense of the world. Uses examples from advertising, films, novels, comic books, television, and videos to provide students with a workable understanding of what textual analysis is, why it matters, and how to do it.

Alabaster Images of Medieval EnglandAlabaster Images of Medieval England

From the late 1300s to the Reformation, alabaster carving was a major activity in the English Midlands, in an area centred on Nottingham. Altarpieces and panels were produced for the home market, but also for export; the sculptures have a distinctive style, dictated by the religious subjects and by the material, and were usually painted and gilded. At the Reformation, such items were hidden or destroyed, and it is the survival of numerous continental examples, particularly in France, together with the remaining examples from England, that enables the history of alabaster carving to be documented.

This book presents an historical overview of the Frankish realms in Central Europe during the Carolingian period. Against this background Part II of the book examines the cultural inventory deposited by the scribal culture in Central Europe as represented by manuscripts, crystals, ivories and gem encrusted liturgical art. Part III deals with such examples of Carolingian wall painting and architecture as are still evident in Central Europe. Though some examples are derivative, many are original. Black and white illustrations generally serve the representation of architecture.
