In the inaugural volume, Liberman addresses fifty-five words traditionally dismissed as being of unknown etymology. Many, such as beacon, oat, hemlock, ivy, and toad, have existed for centuries, whereas some have appeared more recently, for example, slang, kitty-corner, and Jeep.
