Exploring Language Structure: A Student's GuideExploring Language Structure: A Student's Guide

Designed for those beginning to study linguistics, this is a lively introduction to two key aspects of the structure of language: syntax (the structure of sentences) and morphology (the structure of words). It shows students in a step-by-step fashion how to analyze the syntax and morphology of any language, by clearly describing the basic methods and techniques, and providing almost 100 practical exercises based on data from a rich variety of the world's languages. Written in an engaging style and complete with a comprehensive glossary, Exploring Language Structure explains linguistic concepts by using clear analogies from everyday life.

Inner Aspect - The Articulation of VPInner Aspect - The Articulation of VP

This monograph probes the structure of the verb phrase through a cross-linguistic investigation of the syntax and morphology of relevant constructions. In particular, the author provides evidence for two event-related non-lexical projections called "inner aspect" and "event". The former is found within the verb phrase and encodes information on the endpoint of an event. The latter is found at the edge of the verb phrase and demarcates the boundary of a particular domain of syntax, L-syntax.

Understanding Syntax, 3 editionUnderstanding Syntax, 3 edition

Assuming no prior knowledge of linguistics, Understanding Syntax, Third Edition discusses and illustrates the major terms and concepts essential to the study of sentence structure in the world's languages. Word classes such as 'noun' and 'verb' are explained, and the properties of these categories are discussed. You will discover what is meant by the terms 'subject' and 'object', what a finite verb is, and what relative clauses look like. Concepts such as 'gender', 'case', and 'subordination' are introduced and exemplified, with extensive illustration from English and many other languages.

Linguistics: An Introduction to Language and Communication, Sixth EditionLinguistics: An Introduction to Language and Communication, Sixth Edition

This popular introductory linguistics text is unique for its integration of themes. Rather than treat morphology, phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics as completely separate fields, the book shows how they interact. It provides a sound introduction to linguistic methodology while encouraging students to consider why people are intrinsically interested in language--the ultimate puzzle of the human mind. The text first treats such structural and interpretive parts of language as morphology, phonology, syntax, and semantics, then takes a cognitive perspective and covers such topics as pragmatics, psychology of language, language acquisition, and language and the brain.

Comparative Studies in Germanic Syntax - From Afrikaans to Zurich GermanComparative Studies in Germanic Syntax - From Afrikaans to Zurich German

This selection of papers presented at the 20th Comparative Germanic Syntax Workshop brings together contributions that address issues in syntactic predication and studies in the nominal system, as well as papers on data from the history of English and German. Showing a strong comparative commitment, the contributions include studies on previously neglected data on case and predicative structures in Icelandic and other Germanic languages, on the (non-)syntactic distinction of predicative vs. argument NP/DPs...
