A Grammar of Subordinate Structures in English One cannot help but be impressed by the scope and variety of natural sentence structures. Whereas some might have once thought that a language is learned by memorizing its sentences, it is now clear that this is not possible. All normal humans possess the ability to form entirely new sentences, sentences no one has ever heard, read, or uttered before. This, of course, is the creative aspect of language to which adherents of the generative-transformational school of linguistics have repeatedly called our attention.
Syntax is the study of how sentences are built. Whereas the grammar of English (or other languages) might look like a rather chaotic set of arbitrary patterns, linguistic science has revealed that these patterns can actually be understood as a result of a small number of grammatical principles. This lively introductory textbook is designed for undergraduate students in linguistics, English and modern languages with relatively little background in the subject, offering the necessary tools for the analysis of phrases and sentences, while at the same time introducing state-of-the-art syntactic theory, in an accessible and engaging way.

Sometimes in English, we can find sentences whose structures are quite similar but with a totally different meaning. For example: He threw the ball at me vs He threw the ball to me. In this case the only difference is the preposition. However, it causes a big change in meaning as you will be able to read in the answer key.
