Proficiency English: Language and Composition - Book 1Proficiency English: Language and Composition - Book 1

One object of this book is to "expose" you to as many variations of modern English as possible and help you to use them yourself in the appropriate circumstances. Becoming fluent in English does not really depend on learning a lot of more complicated structures than you have studied already. Good modern English is not made up of long, complicated sentences. It largely depends on the correct use of structures and the connecting words and phrases that link sentences together. This book tries to demonstrate by examples the use of such phrases so that you will be encouraged to try them out for yourself in your own speech and writing.

Practice with SentencesPractice with Sentences

For years there has been insufficient provision of specific material for practice with sentences. We speak mostly in sentences, not in individual words or in unrelated verb-parts or in tricky linguistic tests. Our speech and writing are creative-the putting-together of words into sentences. And our linguistic comprehension is mostly of the meanings of sentences rather than individual words. This book aims at filling a gap. It aims at giving plenty of practice in understanding, constructing, and using sentences, and in selecting sentences for certain circumstances.

The Structure of Language: An Introduction to Grammatical AnalysisThe Structure of Language: An Introduction to Grammatical Analysis

Most of the time we communicate using language without considering the complex activity we are undertaking, forming words and sentences in a split second. This book introduces the analysis of language structure, combining both description and theory within a single, practical text. It begins by examining words and parts of words, and then looks at how words work together to form sentences that communicate meaning. Sentence patterns across languages are also studied, looking at the similarities and the differences we find in how languages communicate meaning.
