Conrad is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties (and then always with a marked Polish accent). He wrote stories and novels, predominantly with a nautical or seaboard setting, that depict trials of the human spirit by the demands of duty and honour. Here we follow the adventures of the Dashwood sisters as they find love in an class-conscious Regency England. The Dashwoods, impoverished when their father dies, are forced to live in a small house in the country on 500 pounds a year. With such unfortunate prospects as those, it will be difficult for the elder two, Elinor and Marianne, to find good marriage prospects. Marianne finds herself falling in love with the dashing Willoughby, who ends up being not all that he appears.
Perhaps the first modern novelist, Jane Austen (1775-1817) has left an indelible mark on the world of letters.
