Trends and Prospects in Metacognition presents a collection of chapters dealing principally with independent areas of empirical Metacogition research. These research foci, such as animal metacognition, neuropsychology of metacognition, implicit learning, metacognitive experiences, metamemory, young children's Metacogition, theory of mind, metacognitive knowledge, decision making, and interventions for the enhancement of metacognition, have all emerged as trends in the field of metacognition. Yet, the resulting research has not converged, precluding an integration of concepts and findings.
Directions and Prospects for Educational Linguistics
As pressure builds on the educational systems of the world to serve the needs of increasingly diverse multilingual populations and at a time when multilingualism and multiliteracy are clearly socially and economically advantageous, the need to understand relationships between language and education is particularly acute. Since its formulation in the 1970s, educational linguistics has been developing specifically to address this need.
In the current climate, students all too often are the losers . . . in glossy brochures they’re assured that teaching is important, that a spirit of community pervades the campus, and that general education is the core of the undergraduate experience. But the reality is that on far too many campuses, teaching is not well rewarded and faculty who spend too much time counseling and advising students may diminish their prospects for tenure and promotion.
