Thesis/Dissertation-The Relationship between Children’s Reading Comprehension, Word Reading, Language Skills and Memory in a Normal SampleThe current study aimed to develop a model of reading comprehension for children in middle primary school.  As part of this overall aim there was a particular focus on the contribution of different types of memory to reading comprehension.  The variables selected for consideration were identified from the child and adult literature and were of three types:  word reading, language, and memory.  The sample comprised 180 primary school children in grades 3-5 recruited from two primary schools.  Their ages ranged from 8 years 7 months to 11 years 11 months.

The reading comprehension measure was in a multiple-choice format with the text available when answering the questions.  The five word reading measures were phonological recoding, orthographic processing, text reading accuracy,  text reading speed, and a measure of exposure to print and reading experience.

Nabokov's Art of Memory and European Modernism
36

Nabokov's Art of Memory and European ModernismDespite Vladimir Nabokov's hostility toward literary labels, he clearly recognized his own place in cultural history. In a fresh approach stressing Nabokov's European context, John Foster shows how this writer's art of memory intersects with early twentieth-century modernism. Tracing his interests in temporal perspective and the mnemonic image, in intertextual "reminiscences," and in individuality amid cultural multiplicity, the book begins with such early Russian novels as Mary, then treats his emerging art of memory from Laughter in the Dark to The Gift. After discussing the author's cultural repositioning in his first English novels, Foster turns to Nabokov's masterpiece as an artist of memory, the autobiography Speak, Memory, and ends with an epilogue on Pale Fire.

The Medieval Craft of Memory: An Anthology of Texts and Pictures

The Medieval Craft of Memory: An Anthology of Texts and PicturesIn antiquity and the Middle Ages, memory was a craft, and certain actions and tools were thought to be necessary for its creation and recollection. Until now, however, many of the most important visual and textual sources on the topic have remained untranslated or otherwise difficult to consult. Mary Carruthers and Jan M. Ziolkowski bring together the texts and visual images from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries that are central to an understanding of memory and memory technique. These sources are now made available for a wider audience of students of medieval and early modern history and culture and readers with an interest in memory, mnemonics, and the synergy of text and image.

The art of memory was most importantly associated in the Middle Ages with composition, and those who practiced the craft used it to make new prayers, sermons, pictures, and music. The mixing of visual and verbal media was commonplace throughout medieval cultures: pictures contained visual puns, words were often verbal paintings, and both were used equally as tools for making thoughts. The ability to create pictures in one's own mind was essential to medieval cognitive technique and imagination, and the intensely pictorial and affective qualities of medieval art and literature were generative, creative devices in themselves.
