One focus of study in generative syntactic theory concerns the constraints on the distribution of 'empty categories,' syntactically empty positions, which are either derived through movement.
This book is designed to be used either as a whole or in part. It should be of value, either in the initial training of new language teachers or as a basis for rethinking and mutually profitable discussions among those who are more experienced.
I think there is a clear need for this book as there is increasing recognition of the autistic spectrum as distinct from simply hard core autism, and also either a distinct rise in either the prevalence or recognition of these disorders or both, plus a recognition of the great burden on school systems, families and teachers as they attempt to cope with what are life long disabilities in the absence of any clear cut biological treatments. The book looks well organized and comprehensive. – John O’Reardon, MD, Department of Psychiatry, Director of Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
Great book with clear illustration of the human body and the different systems within. It is perfect for teaching either English or Science to young children.
Mathematical Methods in Linquistics is far more about mathematical methods than about linguistics, although in many places linquistics is used as a source of examples. Instead it covers such mathematical topics as sets (including infinite sets), relations, a good deal of mathematical logic, automata (up to turing machines), the lambda calculus, lattices and more. This would be an excellent book for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student in either mathematics or computer science to use either as a review text, or as a study guide for further investigation.
