This book traces the evolution of the style of men's dress through a sequence of diagrams accurately scaled down from patterns of actual garments, many of them rare museum specimens. The plates have been selected with the same purpose. Some are photographs of suits for which diagrams have also been given; others, reproduced from paintings and old prints, show the costume complete with its accessories. Quotations from contemporary sources--from diaries, travelers' accounts and tailors' bills--supplement Norah Waugh's text with comments on fashion and lively eyewitness descriptions.
Philosophers, more even than poets and composers, set themselves apart from common humanity to engage in their uncommonly rarefied practices. In the unlikely event of their productions becoming even vaguely well known they shun publicity. Their obituaries and encyclopaedic entries condense life long achievements into garbled accounts of their philosophies, dates of publication of their more respectable works and odd biographical details.
Does Marxism have a future? It seems quixotic even to ask this question at a time when it hardly has a present. Everyone these days knows that Marxism is finished; that whatever was right in Marx’s thinking was long ago assimilated into the mainstream intellectual culture, and that everything else has been proven wrong beyond a reasonable doubt. Marxism’s demise was precipitous. But, by all accounts, it was decisive and irreversible. Therefore, Marx and the ism identified with his name are of historical interest only. Anyone who thinks otherwise is blind to the obvious. What follows here challenges this consensus view.

This work explores the significance which contemporary club cultures can come to have for women living through a time of radical-sexual political change. The book focuses upon the experimental accounts of different "raving" and clubbing women by illustrating how new, and more appropriate, fictions of femininity are generated within these accounts. Focus upon these aspects reveals the limitations of reading today's club cultures as indicators of a sexual political regression.
