The Hunchback AssignmentsThe Hunchback Assignments

What do you get when you combine elements of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? You get this exciting steampunk adventure. And though Slade borrows from the classics, the story is original and a fun read. Modo, a young hunchback, is rescued from a traveling freak show by the mysterious Victorian Englishman, Mr. Socrates. He is raised in isolation and trained to master his extraordinary physical powers, which include the ability to alter his deformed features and take on any appearance.

The Victorian Press and the Fairy TaleThe Victorian Press and the Fairy Tale

This is an innovative new study exploring the relationships between developments in the fairy tale and the Victorian periodical press. This title brings together two discrete areas of study (Victorian periodicals and the history of the fairy tale) for the first time. It examines the dynamic role of readers in the evolution of nineteenth-century fantasy. It uses analysis of production and reception contexts to engage with the fairy tale's appropriation in the context of a range of political/historical discourses, including Darwinism, colonialism, feminism, socialism and decadence.

From Dickens to Dracula: Gothic, Economics, and Victorian FictionFrom Dickens to Dracula: Gothic, Economics, and Victorian Fiction

Ranging from the panoramic novels of Dickens to the horror of Dracula, Gail Turley Houston examines the ways in which the language and imagery of economics, commerce and banking are transformed in Victorian Gothic fiction, and traces literary and uncanny elements in economic writings of the period. Houston shows how banking crises were often linked with ghosts or inexplicable non-human forces and financial panic was figured through Gothic or supernatural means.

Gladstone and Ireland - Politics, Religion and Nationality in the Victorian AgeGladstone and Ireland - Politics, Religion and Nationality in the Victorian Age

On 8 June 1886 William Gladstone urged a crowded House of Commons to think ‘not for the moment, but for the years that are to come’ and vote for a Bill conferring domestic self-government on Ireland. This dramatic scene has only a handful of parallels in British history and marked the culmination of Gladstone’s engagement with the ‘Irish Question’. This question had many aspects- political, economic, social, religious, intellectual and constitutional - raising moral issues and provoking a debate on the character and composition of the British nation.
