Turtledove's latest twist on history has the Japanese invading Hawaii in December 1941. The strategic consequences of the U.S. being backed up against its own West Coast, with most of its navy's aircraft carriers sunk, are too extensive to be dealt with in one novel, and one viewpoint character, Joe Crosetti, is training as a naval aviator for the battles to come.

Legends also speak of a Golden Shrine -- sacred to the gods -- on the other side of the Glacier, but few believe these old tales. The Glacier had been retreating even before the founding of the old Raumsdalian Empire. Over the centuries, a gap in the great Glacier has been extending further north.

All of the antiquities have supposedly been taken to safety in bunkers, but he finds a big rock that he hides behind, taking refuge from the Russian sharpshooters. He sees the information sign is still there, and it says that the big rock is the Omphalos stone, from the temple of Apollo at Delphi. He crawls on top of it and disappears.
