This book contains an adapted text of the famous novel "North and South" by the English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. A fascinating story of true love is shown against the background of the confrontation between the North and South of England in the late nineteenth century. The events take place in the northern city of Milton, where the Hale family is moving from southern Helston. Successful industrialist John Thornton becomes a student of Mr. Hale, who, having renounced the priesthood, works as a teacher. Thornton Wilder - The Bridge of San Luis Rey

"On Friday noon, July the twentieth, 1714,the finest bridge in all Peru broke and precipi-tated five travelers into the gulf below." With this celebrated sentence Thornton Wilder begins The Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of the towering achievements in American fiction and a novel read throughout the world.

By chance, a monk witnesses the tragedy. Brother Juniper then embarks on a quest to prove that it was divine intervention rather than chance that led to the deaths of those who perished in the tragedy. His search leads to his own death -- and to the author's timeless investigation into the nature of love and the meaning of the human condition.

The WandererThe Wanderer

With her new story, Monica Edwards returns to Punchbowl Farm and the Thornton Family. As in her previous "Punchbowl" books, Mrs. Edwards writes of the normal, everyday things that happen on a farm, but her skill in describing places and her sympathetic understanding of the problems as well as the excitements that face people who are growing up to-day, set her books in a class by themselves. The chief problem facing Dion, Lindsey and the rest of the Thornton family, is what to do about Chalice, the colt, who is continually breaking out, leading the heifers after him.

The Adventures of Lightfoot the DeerThe Adventures of Lightfoot the Deer

"Men are strange creatures! I think I'll hunt one some day just to teach him a lesson," says Lightfoot the Deer to his new friend, Peter Rabbit.
Lightfoot is glad of all the animal friends he meets in the Green Forest -- especially Paddy the Beaver, who saves him from harm. But what about these men? There's that strange one -- the farmer. Should Lightfoot trust this man -- when a second one is stalking him with a terrible gun?
Thornton Burgess's tales of woodland and meadow have delighted readers young and old for nearly a century.
