A History of the French Language Through Texts

This new history of the French language allows the reader to see how the language has evolved for themselves. Joyce's Nietzschean Ethics

This is the first book-length treatment of James Joyce's multiplicity of styles through the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, the pre-eminent philosopher of style and perspectivism. Sam Slote argues that the range of styles Joyce deploys throughout his works has an ethical dimension. Rather than an influence study, this book concerns Joyce's engagement with issues and problems that are central throughout Nietzsche's works. Ultimately, the intersection between Joyce and Nietzsche raises questions of epistemology, aesthetics, ethics and the construction of the 'Modern' and thus should be of interest to a wide range of readers and scholars.

George Eliot in Context (2013 edition)

Prodigiously learned, alive to the massive social changes of her time, defiant of many Victorian orthodoxies, George Eliot has always challenged her readers. She is at once chronicler and analyst, novelist of nostalgia and monumental thinker. In her great novel Middlemarch she writes of 'that tempting range of relevancies called the universe'. This volume identifies a range of 'relevancies' that inform both her fictional and her non-fictional writings. The range and scale of her achievement are brought into focus by cogent essays on the many contexts - historical, intellectual, political, social, cultural - to her work.

Causality and Connectives: From Grice to relevance (Pragmatics & Beyond New Series)

The book explores finely-grained distinctions in causal meaning, mostly from a relevance-theoretic perspective. To increase the challenge of this double task, i.e. a thorough as well as satisfactory account of cause and a detailed assessment of the theoretical model employed to this end, the current study involves an investigation carried out by way of contrasting the prototypical causal exponents of Modern Greek subordination, i.e. epeiδi and γiati. In addition, this objective is achieved in the methodological framework of contrasting a range of contextual applications of the two connectives against their translated versions in English, realizable by means of because.
