 Although proficiency in vocabulary has long been recognized as basic to reading proficiency, there has been a paucity of research on vocabulary teaching and learning over the last two decades. Recognizing this, the U.S. Department of Education recently sponsored a Focus on Vocabulary conference that attracted the best-known and most active researchers in the vocabulary field. This book is the outgrowth of that conference. It presents scientific evidence from leading research programs that address persistent issues regarding the role of vocabulary in text comprehension.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is now being offered as an internet-based test, or
iBT, and the new edition of Barron’s TOEFL manual has been completely revised and updated to reflect the new format. It presents seven full-length model TOEFL iBT tests with explanations or examples for all questions, including sample essays and speaking responses. The author also offers general orientation to the new TOEFL iBT, as well as a review of academic skills, which include note taking, paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing. There is also a review of language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The
audio CDs present audio prompts for the Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections of all tests in the book.
The optional
CD-ROM
presents seven on-screen TOEFL iBT exams that simulate actual test conditions and provide automatic scoring.
