The Force of Prejudice: On Racism and Its Doubles
10

The Force of Prejudice: On Racism and Its DoublesCan humanity escape segregating behavior or master the tendency to exclusion? Where does the force of prejudice come from? How might one conceive the philosophical foundations of an effective antiracism? Pursuing these questions, Pierre-André Taguieff puts forward a powerful thesis: that racism has evolved from an argument about races, naturalizing inequality between "biologically" defined groups on the basis of fear of the other, to an argument about cultures, naturalizing historical differences and justifying exclusion. Correspondingly, he shows how antiracism must adopt the strategy that fits the variety of racism it opposes.

Looking at racial and racist theories one by one and then at their antiracist counterparts, Taguieff traces an intellectual genealogy of differentialist and inegalitarian ways of thinking. Already viewed as an essential work of reference in France, The Force of Prejudice is an invaluable tool for identifying and understanding both racism and its antidote in our day.

Pierre-Andre Taguieff, philosopher and historian of political ideas, is director of research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France.
Hassan Melehy is assistant professor of French and comparative literature at the University of Connecticut.

Atlas of Mesotherapy in Skin RejuvenationAtlas of Mesotherapy in Skin Rejuvenation
The injection of a combination of vitamins and medications into the middle layer of the skin has been practised in continental Europe for some fifty years now, but because the literature has hitherto not been published in English the topic is still surrounded by a great deal of ignorance and prejudice. This atlas from a renowned authorship will document in detail what is involved in the practical techniques of mesotherapy and will be of extreme interest to all practitioners of cosmetic dermatology. All practitioners in minimally invasive aesthetic surgery will have heard or read about mesotherapy - the injection of a combination of vitamins and medications into the middle layer of the skin - which has been refined in continental Europe for over fifty years, but because the literature has hitherto not been published in English the topic in general is still surrounded by a great deal of ignorance (and even prejudice). This atlas from a renowned European authorship will document in detail what is involved in the practical clinical techniques of mesotherapy and will be an essential reference.

Jane Austen - Pride and Prejudice (original (unabridged) book)

Jane Austen - Pride and Prejudice (original (unabridged) book)Pride and Prejudice, first published on 28 January 1813, is the most famous of Jane Austen's novels and one of the first "romantic comedies" in the history of the novel. The book is Jane Austen's second published novel.

This book portrays life in the genteel rural society of the day, and tells of the initial misunderstandings and later mutual enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennet (whose liveliness and quick wit have often attracted readers) and the haughty Darcy. The title Pride and Prejudice refers (among other things) to the ways in which Elizabeth and Darcy first view each other. The original version of the novel was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions, and was probably in the form of an exchange of letters.
