Piotr Bein, a Polish Canadian, writes on the depleted uranium issue. Before, he started an on-going virtual Polish book about NATO intervention in the Balkans. His interest in the topics started with the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. In the summer of 2000 he and his son Magnus packed their bikes and flew from Canada to Poland for a bike-and-train trip south to Serbia, although not together all the way.
Polish Encounters, Russian Identity (Indiana-Michigan Series in Russian and East European Studies)
At a time when Poland is emphasizing its distance from Russia, Polish Encounters, Russian Identity points to the historical ties and mutual influences of these two great Slavic peoples. Whether Poland adopted a hostile or a friendly stance toward Russia, the intense responses of Russian thinkers, writers, and political leaders to Poland and to Polish culture shaped Russians' idea of themselves and their place in the world.
Model Nazi, Arthur Greiser and the Occupation of Western Poland
Model Nazi tells the story of Arthur Greiser, the man who initiated the Final Solution in Nazi-occupied Poland. Between 1939 and 1945, Greiser was the territorial leader of the Warthegau, an area of western Poland annexed to Nazi Germany. In an effort to make the Warthegau "German," Greiser introduced numerous cruel policies. He spearheaded an influx of hundreds of thousands of ethnic Germans. He segregated Germans from Poles, and introduced wide-ranging discriminatory measures against the Polish population.
Since this original edition was published, reform leader Lech Walesa and the Solidarity movement have all but disappeared from the political scene in Poland.
For a better part of its history, Poland's destiny has often been strongly influenced, if not determined, by actions of its neighbors. From the west, Germans often advanced eastward; from the east, Russians, and later Soviets, expanded toward the west. In both cases, Poland was in their path. Yet, despite attempts by others to integrate or divide Poland, its people managed to overcome countless obstacles, preserve their ethnic identity and unity, and remain independent.
